For years, Oakland Community Organizations has been organizing Friday night walks in collaboration with the city of Oakland, other community organizations and faith leaders to stop the gun violence in the community with the Ceasefire strategy.
There were 131 homicides in Oakland in 2012, and the overwhelming majority of the victims were—and continue to be—African-American and Latino men.
In 2013, after leading the faith community in increasing the peace, Oakland’s homicide rate dropped by 28 percent.
As the communications specialist for the organization, I produced this video for OCO to help explain how the night walks make an impact in the community.
